The aorta is the main blood vessel carrying blood from the heart to the body. In this condition, the inner wall of the aorta develops a dangerous tear. Blood enters the tear and separates the layers of the blood vessel wall. Without immediate treatment, the aorta can rupture and cause death. The damaged portion of the aorta is surgically removed or repaired. An artificial tube called a graft may replace the damaged section. Blood flow to the brain and other vital organs must be protected during surgery. The procedure is often performed as an emergency.Severe bleeding and organ damage are major risks. It is one of the most challenging emergency surgeries in cardiac science.
