Colorectal cancer develops in the colon or rectum and is becoming increasingly common in India, particularly among older adults. It often begins as small, non-cancerous growths called polyps that may gradually become cancerous over time. Common symptoms include persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or tiredness due to anaemia. However, some people may have no symptoms in the early stages.
A healthy diet rich in fibre, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol can help reduce the risk. When detected early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted treatments depending on the stage of the disease. Early evaluation of persistent bowel symptoms can make a significant difference to treatment outcomes.
