Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborn babies that causes yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. It usually appears within the first few days after birth because a baby’s liver is still developing and may not efficiently remove bilirubin, a natural pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. In most babies, jaundice is mild and resolves on its own or with simple treatment such as phototherapy.
However, very high bilirubin levels can affect the brain if left untreated. Parents should seek medical advice if the yellow discoloration becomes more noticeable, spreads to the legs, the baby is difficult to wake, feeds poorly, or develops a fever. Regular newborn check-ups help identify jaundice early and ensure safe, timely treatment for a healthy start to life.
